The second issue of 13tracks is built around Playlist 18 — thirteen tracks chosen to sit together, to move between moods and decades, from Thurston Moore to The Beatles, Anderson .Paak to Mogwai, Tame Impala to Serge Gainsbourg. Each track drew a response from a writer and a visual artist — contributors who chose the tracks that resonated with them.

Their responses take different forms: stories, images, fragments — not illustrations of the music, but something that shares its feeling. You can follow the playlist in sequence or wander through it freely. Listen while you read, or come back to the music later. There's no right way in.

This is a way of engaging with music as a creative practice. Like many music lovers, I’ve been making mixtapes, compilations, playlists, whatever you want to call them, since childhood. I believe there’s something magical in connecting together pieces of music thoughtfully to create something greater than the sum of its parts.
