It wasn't about photojournalism, or reportage, it was just using lots of different photographic equipment, doing lots of units in different areas. All I kept saying is ‘Can I use the darkroom? Can I use the room?’ It almost became more a facility to me than an actual course. I didn't learn that much, a few basics of camera craft and printing stuff and then I was just out doing my own stuff. Even when we were supposed to be doing studio stuff I'd be out doing clubs, raves, football, terraces, whatever, different stuff. I’d already found the way I wanted to be. I'd sit down with the teacher and say this is what I'm doing and they just told me what to fulfill to get the units for the course which I would do but it slowed me down. Portraits of a pair of gloves with roses coming out, it's just not for me all that. Grolsch bottles and jazz album covers specially lit with filters. So I think the rave thing kind of was a little bit of escapism. It got me into places, I was always more of a club person than a festival or rave with 20,000 people in a field. So yeah, I think there was a bit of indulgence and a bit of escapism, but I'd lived a lifetime of clubbing already before then you know, so it wasn't my teens, my youth. You know, it was somebody else's I was kind of looking into."

36 pages

printed in the UK

staple bound

14cm x 20cm

About Café Royal Books:

"Café Royal Books is the idea of Craig Atkinson, an artist and lecturer. Because I went to college as a mature student, I was pretty driven. They would give us loads of boring studio objects and portraits and pack shots and exercises to do because it was a generic photography course. This was because wholesale regeneration of Salford’s housing stock was sweeping away the ranks of Victorian terraced streets and their paving of stone setts, the very features which defined how a TV audience expected ‘the north’ to look. All the traits of the black and white photographs are there: close observations of bodily gestures, definition of personal and relational space, everyday absurdities, and acute recognition of urban form in street perspectives, roof tops and alleyways. His ringing arpeggios and chordal innovations helped elevate The Smiths to one of the, if not the, most influential and important British bands of its era.Tracing Marr's career from his teenage years to his recent work on the Bond soundtrack, Marr’s Guitars showcases the most significant of Marr’s superb collection of electric and acoustic guitars, revealing through them the evolution of his iconic sound and style of playing. Each guitar is identified with a crucial moment, a specific song or a particular sound, and each embodies a key aspect of Marr’s lifelong passion.

Renowned photographer Pat Graham presents each instrument as a full body portrait, supported by micro shots highlighting the specific details that make each one unique, while Johnny Marr himself reveals in his accompanying commentary on what tracks and at which gigs each guitar was played. Many of the guitars are closely associated with Marr, such as the Rickenbacker 330, the Gibson ES-355 and the Johnny Marr Signature Fender Jaguar. Some were passed down to him, including John Entwistle’s Epiphone Coronet, Bert Jansch’s Yamaha acoustic, Bryan Ferry’s Hagstrom and Nile Rodgers’ Stratocaster. By winter 1976, they were heard loud and clear! The band, and the fans who immediately identified with them as representing the spirit of their new age, had caused a dramatic break with the past. There was horror in the music industry as older musicians and established record companies sensed they had lost control and were about to become outdated if not redundant.
